A Google snippet is the preview of your page in Google’s search results. It normally consists of the title tag, the URL and the meta description. In some cases further elements such as reviews or prices appear as well, known as rich snippets.
Snippets are a central part of organic SEO. A good ranking matters, but so does whether people actually click. Your snippet decides whether someone chooses your page or keeps scrolling.
Why snippets matter
You can think of a Google snippet as a free advertisement in the search results.
Even with a good ranking, a weak title or a dull description can lower your click-through rate considerably. A strongly written snippet can beat results positioned above you.
So it is not only about keywords. It is about the searcher feeling understood.
Focus on the user
When optimising, many people first think about what Google wants to see. The more useful question is what the user wants to see.
Your snippet should clearly answer:
- Does this page solve my problem?
- Does this company serve my area?
- Is the price range right for me?
- Is this exactly the service I am looking for?
Stringing keywords together achieves nothing. Your snippet should read as clear, understandable and relevant.
The title tag is there to catch attention. The meta description works as a short teaser explaining what your page offers.
