What is a keyword?

A keyword is the search term someone types into Google – a single word such as ”running shoes” or a whole phrase such as ”running shoes for flat feet”. In SEO, the keyword is the term a page is meant to be found for.

Keywords are the bridge between what people search for and what your website offers. If you do not know the words your customers use, you end up writing past them.

How do keywords work in SEO?

It all starts with keyword research. It shows which terms people search for, how often and with what intent. From that you build a map: every important page gets one main keyword plus related terms.

  • The main keyword belongs in the title tag, the heading and the first paragraph.
  • Related terms and synonyms keep the copy natural and complete.
  • Two pages targeting the same keyword compete with each other – and both lose strength.

Keyword stuffing, repeating a term over and over, does more harm than good. Google has long understood context and synonyms on its own.

Why do keywords matter?

Not every keyword brings in revenue. For an online shop, ”buy running shoes” is worth more than ”history of running shoes”; for a medical practice, searches for a treatment count for more than searches for a technical term. What matters is the search intent behind the term.

Keywords remain the foundation for AI search such as ChatGPT as well: the questions there are longer, but they revolve around the same topics. With ongoing SEO management, you keep track of which keywords your pages are found for and which of them actually bring in enquiries and revenue.
