Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means optimising content for answer engines. The goal is not a place in a list of links but for your page to provide the direct answer to a question – in a featured snippet on Google, via a voice assistant or in an AI answer.
The term is older than GEO. It emerged when voice assistants and highlighted answer boxes appeared on Google, and it has taken on new meaning with ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
How does AEO work?
Answer engines look for passages that answer a question concisely, correctly and on their own. You achieve that with:
- questions as subheadings, phrased the way customers ask them
- a clear answer in two or three sentences directly below, followed by the details
- lists and tables for steps, comparisons and prices
- structured data that describes questions, products and your business in a machine-readable way
Why does AEO matter?
More and more searches end without a click, because the answer is already on the results page. If you provide that answer, you are still seen – as a source, as a named brand and often as the first provider someone thinks of. For practices, shops and SaaS providers with many recurring customer questions, that is a major lever.
AEO, GEO and SEO work hand in hand: without good rankings on Google, AI is also less likely to find your answers. With ongoing GEO management, you structure your content so that it gets chosen as the answer on Google and in AI responses.
