What is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool from Google that lets you manage tracking codes on your website without changing the source code every time. These codes are called tags – for Google Analytics, Google Ads or the Meta Pixel, for example.

Once installed, you control all tags centrally from one interface. That saves development time and keeps things organised.

How does Google Tag Manager work?

Only a small piece of code, the so-called container, sits on the website. Everything else you set up in Tag Manager:

  • Tags: what gets fired, for example an event for Google Analytics
  • Triggers: when it gets fired, such as when a form is submitted or a phone number is clicked
  • Variables: which values are sent along, such as the order value

A preview mode shows whether everything fires correctly before you publish. Every change is saved as a version and can be rolled back. Consent Mode also lets you tie tags to cookie consent.

Why does Google Tag Manager matter?

Without clean tracking, you do not know which channels bring in enquiries, bookings and sales. Only once forms, calls and purchases are measured can you judge SEO by revenue rather than clicks – including for visitors who arrive via Google or an AI answer.

In SEO consulting with Northstar Media, the first question is therefore whether your tracking is right. After all, every decision about content and budget is only as good as the data behind it.
