Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin that lets you control the most important SEO settings of your website directly in the backend. It is one of the most installed WordPress plugins of all time and comes in a free and a premium version.
The plugin does not do your SEO for you. What it does is give you the tools to set page titles, meta descriptions and technical signals properly without writing a line of code.
What does Yoast SEO actually do?
Yoast SEO adds a dedicated SEO panel to every post and page and takes care of several technical basics in the background:
- page title and meta description per page, including a preview of the Google snippet
- an automatic XML sitemap
- a canonical tag to prevent duplicate content
- structured data based on Schema.org, output as one connected graph
- control over indexing, for example noindex for archive pages
- breadcrumbs for your theme and the search result
On top of that comes the well-known red, amber and green rating, which scores readability and how the focus keyword is used in the text.
Why does Yoast SEO matter – and where are its limits?
Without an SEO plugin, WordPress lacks central features such as a clean sitemap or freely editable meta data. Yoast SEO closes that gap and prevents typical technical mistakes.
The green light is not a ranking promise, though. It checks formal criteria – not whether your content matches the search intent, whether your page loads quickly or whether other websites link to you. Optimising for green alone often produces wooden copy.
For strategy, technical work and content that go beyond plugin settings, it pays to work with a WordPress SEO agency.
