A prompt is the input you use to tell an AI what to do – a question, an instruction or an entire task with background information. What the search query is on Google, the prompt is on ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini.
The clearer the prompt, the more useful the answer. If you state the role, goal and context, you get far better results than with a single keyword.
How do prompts differ from search queries?
On Google, people usually type just a few words. In an AI tool, they write full sentences and describe their situation along the way:
- On Google: ”accounting software SME”
- In an AI tool: ”Which accounting software suits a business with twelve employees that receives a lot of invoices from abroad?”
The AI often breaks such prompts down into several searches and combines the results into a recommendation.
Why do prompts matter?
Alongside traditional Google search, prompts are the second route by which customers find you. If you know which questions your customers ask an AI, you can write content that answers exactly those questions – and gets named as a source or recommendation.
With ongoing GEO management, you regularly track which prompts make your brand appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, and where competitors are named in your place.
