Collections are the category pages of a Shopify shop. A collection groups products together – for example ”Women’s running shoes” or ”Sale” – and shows them on a page of their own under /collections/name.
For your customers, collections are the way to navigate your range. For search engines, they are often the most important pages of the entire shop.
What types of collections are there?
- Manual collections: you pick each product individually. Useful for small, curated groups.
- Automated collections: Shopify assigns products based on conditions such as tag, price or vendor. New products end up in the right collection on their own.
Why do collections matter for SEO?
Someone searching for ”women’s running shoes” wants to see a selection, not a single product. Collection pages serve exactly these high-volume searches. That is why they need their own title tag, a meta description and descriptive copy – not just a product grid.
There are two Shopify quirks you should know. First, every product is also reachable under /collections/name/products/product. Shopify does set a canonical tag pointing to the main URL, but many themes still link internally to the longer version. Second, filters and tags create additional URLs with almost identical content. A Shopify SEO agency cleans up these structures so that the strength lands on the right pages.
