Liquid is Shopify’s template language. Every Shopify theme is made of Liquid files: they define which data from the shop – products, prices, collections – ends up where in the HTML. Shopify developed Liquid itself and released it as open source.
Liquid is not a full programming language but a toolkit of placeholders and simple logic. That is exactly what makes it safe and comparatively easy to read.
How does Shopify Liquid work?
Liquid has three building blocks:
- Objects output content, for example
{{ product.title }} - Tags control the logic, such as conditions and loops with
{% if %}and{% for %} - Filters modify the output, for example
{{ product.price | money }}
When a page is requested, Shopify fills these placeholders with real shop data and delivers finished HTML.
Why does Liquid matter for SEO?
Almost everything search engines evaluate in a Shopify shop is generated in the theme’s Liquid code: title tag, meta description, canonical tag, heading structure and structured data for products. Apps can only influence this to a limited degree.
Typical SEO jobs in Liquid include clean product schema, internal links pointing to the canonical product URL and removing code that slows the page down. Changes always belong in a copy of the theme first, never straight in the live theme. A Shopify SEO agency implements changes like these without putting the running shop at risk.
