What is organic search?

Organic search covers all unpaid results in search engines such as Google. When you search for something and click a result that is not an ad, that visit came from organic search.

These results appear because Google considers them relevant and useful, not because somebody paid for the position.

How does organic search work?

Google assesses websites against many factors, among them the quality of the content, its relevance to the query, the user experience, backlinks and the technical structure of the site.

The better a website matches a query, the higher it can appear in the organic results.

Typical characteristics of organic results:

  • no ”ad” label
  • based on relevance rather than advertising budget
  • can be improved through SEO
  • appear below or between paid ads
  • often bring traffic over the long term

Why organic search matters

For many websites, organic results are the most important source of visitors and enquiries.

Unlike advertising, you do not pay for every click. Good rankings can therefore bring traffic, leads and revenue for years.

In SEO, organic search is the whole point, because this is where durable visibility is built.
