What is sponsored content?

Sponsored content is paid content that is funded by companies but comes across like ordinary editorial material. It includes, for example, articles, videos, social media posts or podcasts that promote a brand, a product or a service.

The content is usually published on third-party websites, in online magazines or on social media platforms, and it should be clearly marked as advertising or as a sponsored contribution.

How does sponsored content work?

Companies pay publishers, media outlets or influencers to publish content that makes their brand visible. Unlike classic adverts, sponsored content often feels more natural because it is built to be informative or entertaining.

Typical examples are:

  • Sponsored blog articles
  • Paid Instagram posts
  • Mentions in podcasts
  • Videos with product placements
  • Advertorials in online magazines

The focus is often on building trust and not putting users off with obvious advertising.

Why is sponsored content important?

Sponsored content can increase reach, brand awareness and trust. For SEO it is important that paid links in such content are labelled correctly, for example with the attribute “sponsored” or “nofollow”.

This lets Google recognise that it is advertising and evaluate the links accordingly.
