What is Perplexity?

Perplexity is an AI search engine from the US company Perplexity AI. Instead of a list of links, it delivers a written answer and names the websites the information comes from as numbered sources.

Perplexity sees itself as an ”answer engine”: you ask a question, and the answer brings several sources together. The search can be used in the browser and as an app.

How does Perplexity work?

For every question, Perplexity searches the web live, selects suitable pages and has a large language model write an answer from them. The principle is called retrieval-augmented generation. In practice, this means:

  • Statements are linked to sources that users can click directly.
  • Users can ask follow-up questions, and the search goes deeper in conversation.
  • Depending on the plan, different language models are available to choose from.

Why does Perplexity matter?

Because Perplexity shows its sources visibly, a mention brings not only awareness but also clicks from people who are already looking into a topic in depth. That is particularly valuable for products that need explaining, software or health topics, because people research especially thoroughly there before making a decision.

What gets cited is content that is current, well structured and reachable by Perplexity’s crawler. With ongoing GEO management, you check for which questions Perplexity names your pages as a source – and where only competitors appear so far.
