Above the fold describes the part of a website that is visible immediately, without the visitor scrolling down. This section appears as soon as the page loads and usually holds the most important information, headlines or calls to action.
The term comes from newspaper printing, where it referred to the upper half of the front page, the part you could see at a newsstand. In web design it now means the first visible area of a page on screen.
What role does above the fold play?
The visible area decides the first impression. Users often take only a few seconds to decide whether to stay or go back to the search results.
That is why many websites put their most important elements right there.
Typical content in the upper area of a page:
- a clear main headline
- a short explanation of what is on offer
- a call to action, for example contact or booking
- an image or visual element
- important trust signals
Why above the fold matters for SEO and for users
The upper area mainly affects the user experience. When visitors understand straight away what a page is about, they tend to stay longer.
That can have an indirect positive effect on SEO. Good structure, clear messaging and fast loading all help people take in the content and engage with the page.
