What is LLMO?

LLMO stands for large language model optimisation. It covers all the measures a brand takes to make sure AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity know it, describe it correctly and recommend it in relevant answers.

The term is often used interchangeably with generative engine optimisation (GEO). LLMO emphasises the model itself, while GEO focuses more on the AI search engines built on such models.

How does LLMO work?

A language model learns about your brand from two sources: its training data and what it finds live on the web when answering a query. LLMO addresses both:

  • consistent information about your brand, services and location across all channels
  • mentions on trustworthy websites, specialist portals and industry directories
  • content that answers typical customer questions clearly and in a citable way
  • structured data that explains the connections to Google and AI systems

Why does LLMO matter?

When someone asks an AI for the best solution, it usually names only a few providers. If you are missing there, you are not even considered – even with good rankings on Google. LLMO therefore complements traditional SEO rather than replacing it.

With ongoing GEO management, you combine both: Northstar Media measures how AI models talk about your brand and builds up the sources they rely on.
