What is a .co domain?

1 min read Last updated: 18 Sep 2026

A .co domain is a top-level domain that was originally country specific (ccTLD) for Colombia. Today it is used worldwide and is often chosen as a modern alternative to classic endings such as .com.

The reason: “.co” is frequently interpreted as an abbreviation for “company”. This makes the domain particularly popular with startups, tech companies and international projects. At the same time, many names are still available under .co that have already been taken under .com.

Technically there is no difference to other domain endings. You can use it quite normally for websites, email and online projects. It is important to note, however, that users can sometimes confuse it with .com.

Characteristics at a glance

  • Originally the domain of Colombia
  • Freely usable worldwide today
  • Popular with startups and digital brands
  • Often used as an alternative to .com

What role does this play in SEO?

For SEO, Google does not primarily evaluate the domain ending but content and relevance. A .co domain can therefore rank just as well as a .com domain.

Perception can play a role, however. Users are more likely to click on familiar endings, which can affect the click-through rate. If you operate internationally, .co is nevertheless a solid and flexible option.
